Christ, the Rock, is riven;
Living water’s flowing;

It is blocked from going.

I will dig by praying,
Dig the dirt entirely,
Thus release the Spirit,
Let the stream flow freely.

There’s no need again that
Christ, the Rock, be riven,
But unto the digging
That I should be given.

What I need most deeply
Is the Spirit’s filling,
That the living water

(2) The Well for Isaac
Praise the Lord that there is another well—the well for Isaac ( vv. 22-34 ). Many verses in the Bible speak of this positive well. Psalm 36:8 says, “Thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. ” The Lord likes to make us drink of His river of pleasures. In John 4:14 the Lord Jesus said, “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall by no means thirst forever; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a spring of water welling up into eternal life. ” This means that God Himself will be our life. In John 7:37 and 38 the Lord Jesus also spoke of drinking: “If anyone thirst, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water. ” Moreover, in 1 Corinthians 12:13 , the Apostle Paul says that we have all been made to drink of one Spirit, that is, of one well of water. Even the last chapter of the Bible contains a word about drinking: “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come!... Let him who is thirsty also come; he who wills, let him take the water of life freely” ( Rev. 22:17 ). This divine well must be the source of our living.

5. The Spring of the Water of Life
Revelation 21:6 indicates that in the New Jerusalem Christ will be the spring of the water of life: “I will give to him who thirsts from the spring of the water of life freely. ” Here we have the spring of the water of life, and in Revelation 22:1 , the river of water of life. The water of life is the Triune God Himself as life to us. This water of life first has a spring and then a flow, a river. The flow comes from the spring, and the spring comes from the fountain. The fountain is the Father, the spring is the Son, and the flow, the river, is the Spirit. In eternity Christ will be the spring of the water of life, even as the Spirit will be the river and the Father will be the fountain.
As we consider the fountain, the spring, and the river, we see a picture of the Triune God flowing out as the water of life to dispense Himself into His redeemed people. According to the picture portrayed in Revelation 21 and 22 , the river of water of life will flow in a spiral manner throughout the New Jerusalem and saturate the entire city. This is God’s marvelous dispensing.

“In Numbers 21:17, 18 Israel sang a song to the well: “Spring up, well! Sing to it! /The well which the leaders dug, / Which the nobles of the people hollowed out/ With the scepter and their staves. ” (For a hymn on the spiritual significance of digging the well, see Hymns #250. ). According to this song, the well was dug by the leaders and nobles. Those today who seek after the Spirit and take the lead to dig the well are noble and are leaders. ”

From The Economy of God, chapter 10:
Forget about your needs, your job, your future, and your circumstances. Only seek the Lord’s presence, and ask Him to bring you into His light. Then follow His light to dig away the dirt in your conscience, heart, mind, will, and emotion. The more you dig away the dirt, the more you will be alive. You will be living, you will be strengthened, and you will be victorious. This is the key to solve your many problems. You must maintain the flow of living water, that is, the fellowship of life flowing freely within you. When the living water flows freely within you, then there is victory. All the problems will be solved spontaneously and even unconsciously. Although you do not know how to solve them, yet they will be solved by the flowing of the living water, the fellowship of life. This flowing of the living water is entirely dependent upon your digging.

Numbers 21:17 then Israel sang this song: Spring up, oh well! Sing to it! The well, which the leaders sank, which the nobles of the people dug... Footnote: the digging of the well signifies the digging away of the "dirt," the barriers in our heart, so that the Spirit as the living water may spring up and flow freely!
Verse 3 " I will dig by praying,/ Dig the dirt entirely,? Thus release the Spirit,? Let the stream flow freely. " The dirt in us is sin. As soon as we saved, the Spirit indwells in us, however, He cannot fill because we are still full of sin. This can be liken to a glass that cannot be filled with water because it is filled with dirt. Dirt must be emptied out before water can be poured in. The amount of dirt that is removed is the amount of water that can be poured into the glass. We should ask ourselves whether we have ever thoroughly confessed our sins to the Lord even once. (from the book How God becomes Man's Enjoyment, p. 15)
