I have been singing this song for many years and never knew the true impact until about a month ago when I was going through some life issues and it spoke me and the dam broke and I was crying so much, what am amazing song. Thank you Jesus.
Mrs. Annie Sherwood Hawks, who wrote this hymn in 1872, was born in Hoosick, New York, in 1835. She sent the hymn (five stanzas) to Dr. Lowry, who composed its tune, adding a chorus to make it more effective. It first appeared in a small collection of original songs prepared by Lowry and Doane for the National Baptist Sunday School Association, which met at Cincinnati, Ohio, November, 1872, and was sung there.
One instance, at least, of a hymn made doubly impressive by its chorus will be tested by all who have sung or heard the pleading words and music of Mrs. Hawks’ and Dr. Lowry’s “I need Thee Oh, I need Thee. ”
The Reverend Robert Lowry was born in Philadelphia, March 12, 1826, and educated at Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. From his 28th year until his death, 1899, he was a faithful and successful minister of Christ but is more widely known as a composer of sacred music.
Only Jesus can fill the longing in our souls. Listening to this hymn stirs my holy emotions. I sing this hymn as a prayer, telling the Saviour how much I need him. My heart says amen to every line of this hymn. Without him, life is vain. I thank the Lord for the inspired hymns he’s given to the Church.
Surely every hour we need Him. From hour to hour we do not know what situations will confront us. We may say hallelujah or amen in the meeting, but when we get home, our joy may vanish, and instead of hallelujah and amen there will be silence and a long face. A problem has arisen. Or we may get chilled and catch cold. Whatever the problem, Christ is there taking care of our case. He bears us when we have a long face or are ill. His interceding never ceases. His ability to take care of us is unlimited because He is the almighty God. His priesthood is an interceding ministry in the heavens, in the Holy of Holies, before God for us.
