Nearer, my God, to Thee

1
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
  Nearer to Thee;
E'en though it be a cross
  That raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
  Nearer to Thee.
2
Though, like a wanderer,
  The sun gone down,
Darkness comes over me,
  My rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
  Nearer to Thee.
3
There let me see the sight,
  An open heaven;
All that Thou sendest me,
  In mercy given;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
  Nearer to Thee.
4
Then, with my waking thoughts
  Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs
  Bethel I'll raise,
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
  Nearer to Thee.

I've come to love old hymnals - this is one of my favorites that moves me. I don't care much for the new age rock and roll hip hop of the new emerging style churches, so I find myself always searching for the Spiritual songs of old, as part of the remnant church in these last days.

God bless you for putting this together, and I'll see you in the air, soon!

I was at a memorial set up two days after a siege in Sydney where people were held and killed. It was near Christmas and the Salvation Army Band were playing this hymn instead of normal carols. No one was talking (and there was a big crowd as you can imagine) and the atmosphere was amazingly peaceful and comforting. I was trying to keep my crying under control.

Sad but beautiful hymn to have been the last heard by over 1500 people the night RMS Titanic sank in the north Atlantic
