There is One amid all changes
Who standeth ever fast,
One who covers all the future,
The present and the past;
It is Christ the Rock of Ages,
The first and the last,
The first and the last.
Who standeth ever fast,
One who covers all the future,
The present and the past;
It is Christ the Rock of Ages,
The first and the last,
The first and the last.
Jesus is the first,
Jesus is the last,
Trust Him for thy future,
Leave with Him the past;
Jesus is the first,
Jesus is the last,
Christ the Rock of Ages,
The first and the last.
Jesus is the last,
Trust Him for thy future,
Leave with Him the past;
Jesus is the first,
Jesus is the last,
Christ the Rock of Ages,
The first and the last.

There is One whose arms upholdeth
This whole creation vast,
Yet He bids us on His bosom
Our cares and sorrows cast;
Let us bring them all to Jesus,
The first and the last,
The first and the last.
This whole creation vast,
Yet He bids us on His bosom
Our cares and sorrows cast;
Let us bring them all to Jesus,
The first and the last,
The first and the last.
3
There is One whose love has kept us
Through every stormy blast,
And His hand will guard and guide us
Till all the storms are past;
Jesus, we will trust Thee ever,
The first and the last,
The first and the last.
Through every stormy blast,
And His hand will guard and guide us
Till all the storms are past;
Jesus, we will trust Thee ever,
The first and the last,
The first and the last.
4
First and last, O Christ, we crown Thee,
Our fondest love Thou hast;
Lord of lords, before Thy footstool
Let every crown be cast;
Haste the day when all shall crown Thee,
The first and the last,
The first and the last.
Our fondest love Thou hast;
Lord of lords, before Thy footstool
Let every crown be cast;
Haste the day when all shall crown Thee,
The first and the last,
The first and the last.

I. CHRIST BEING UNCHANGEABLE,
REMAINING THE SAME FOREVER
------------------------------------
Verse 8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes, even forever. ” Christ, who is the word that the ministers of the word of God in verse 7 preached and taught, who is the life that they lived, and who is the Author and Perfecter of their faith, is perpetual, unchangeable, and unchanging. He remains the same forever (1:11-12). The writer seemed to be telling the Hebrew believers, “Brothers, God sent His messengers to preach to you the word of Christ. Christ was not only the word they preached but the very life by which they lived. This Christ is always the same. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. If you accepted Him as the Christ in the past, you should not change your concept now due to the strange teachings about eating. Do not sell your birthright in Christ for one meal of this ceremonial eating. If you had not received Christ, I would not speak to you this way. But you have received the unchangeable Christ. Since He does not change, you should not change either. Do not be distracted by the strange teachings about ceremonial eating. That eating means nothing. ” Hebrews is a deep book. We cannot understand it according to the black and white letters. If we would understand chapter 13 , we must plunge into the depths of this book.
II. HOLDING ON TO THE
UNCHANGEABLE CHRIST
FOR A TRUE AND STEADFAST
CHURCH LIFE
--------------------
Verse 9 mentions “various strange teachings. ” For a true and steadfast church life, we must hold on to the unchangeable Christ and not be carried away by various strange teachings used by Satan to cause dissension and even division in the church. Because of the dissension and division caused by strange teachings, the apostle charged people “not to teach different things” (1 Tim. 1:3). These various strange teachings must have been taught at that time by the Judaizers. The writer warned the Hebrew believers not to let the teachings of the Judaizers carry them away from the church life under the new covenant. There must not be “another Jesus, ” “a gospel beyond, ” preached in the church (2 Cor. 11:4 ; Gal. 1:8-9). For a true and steadfast church life, we must hold on to the Christ who is the same yesterday, today, and even forever, and must not be carried away by various strange teachings.

Our unchanging Christ is changing us! He is before all things, and all things have Him as the goal (Col. 1:17,16; Eph. 1:10). God has given Him the first place in all things of the first creation and of the new creation (Col. 1:18). When we come in contact with the preeminent Christ, a good work begins in us which He will complete for God's good pleasure (Phil. 1:7; 2:13)! He is the first and the last of God's good pleasure, and He is the first and the last in our revelation, experience and service!
