Who is on the Lord's side

1
Who is on the Lord's side?
  Who will serve the King?
Who will be His helpers,
  Other lives to bring?
Who will leave the world's side?
  Who will face the foe?
Who is on the Lord's side?
  Who for Him will go?
  By Thy grand redemption,
  By Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord's side;
    Savior, we are Thine.
2
Not for weight of glory,
  Not for crown and palm,
Enter we the army,
  Raise the warrior psalm;
But for love that claimeth
  Lives for whom He died;
He whom Jesus nameth
  Must be on His side.
3
Jesus, Thou hast bought us,
  Not with gold or gem,
But with Thine own life-blood,
  For Thy diadem;
With Thy blessing filling
  Each who comes to Thee,
Thou hast made us willing,
  Thou hast made us free.
4
Fierce may be the conflict,
  Strong may be the foe,
But the King's own army
  None can overthrow.
Round His standard ranging
  Victory is secure,
For His truth unchanging
  Makes the triumph sure.
5
Chosen to be soldiers
  In an alien land:
Chosen, called, and faithful,
  For our Captain's band;
In the service royal
  Let us not grow cold;
Let us be right loyal,
  Noble, true, and bold.

Lord even in the midst of apparent evil and injustice in our land, there are men who still declare for you. We are on the Lord’s side! Nigeria is Yours standing on Your word and for Your chosen people Israel and for Your eternal purpose—CHRIST!

I recall singing this song growing up. Used to be in the Adventist Hymnal without a chorus (I think). It's a rally call to every Christian who claims to hold the banner of Jesus. In our present world dominated by self, greed, so-so much evil, our orders as Christians is clear. I hope this song continues to inspire many others around the world.

This is an old song. We sang it every where growing up. In church, at funerals, doing your chores at home etc. I understood it, the meaning was clear but in a carnal way. Now in Christ Jesus, it touches my spirit, brings to my spirit an urgency that I'm here for a purpose, for a calling and to fulfill that calling, the mandate for which we in the world. Thank you! It's a great gift. God bless.

I deeply love this song. It always reminds me to stay true to my journey as a Christian. I used to sing it daily in class when I was in high school and had nearly forgotten the lyrics. Wonderful hymn.

This is such a wonderful hymn. Me and my daughter, Viki Pearlette even sang this song in a restaurant. Love this.

For someone who struggled with illness much of her life, Frances Ridley Havergal wrote a remarkable number of vigorous, robust hymns. The last manuscript she worked on was "Starlight through the Shadows", a book for invalids. She died before she could complete the book, but her sister added the final chapter from Havergal's unpublished papers. That chapter is entitled "Marching Orders" and concludes with the words of this hymn.

The hymn is based on 1 Chronicles 12:1-18. In the biblical text, the early followers of David are listed: archers and slingers, experts in running and swimming. David asked them whose side they were on, and they responded: "We are yours, David! We are on your side" (1 Chronicles 12:18). - Great Songs of Faith by Brown and Norton

In the original, there is no chorus, but there are 4 extra lines on the end of each stanza. The last 4 lines of each stanza have the same last 3 lines except for the final stanza 5. Here are the last 4 lines of each stanza:

1. By Thy call of mercy,

by Thy grace divine,

We are on the Lord's side -

Savior, we are Thine.

2. By Thy love constraining,

by Thy grace divine,

We are on the Lord's side -

Savior, we are Thine.

3. By Thy grand redemption

by Thy grace divine,

We are on the Lord's side -

Savior, we are Thine.

4. Joyfully enlisting,

by Thy grace divine,

We are on the Lord's side -

Savior, we are Thine.

5. Master Thou wilt keep us,

by Thy grace divine,

Always on the Lord's side -

Savior, we are Thine.
