1
Since Christ my soul from sin set free,
This life has been a joy to me;
And 'mid earth's sorrows and its woe,
’Tis joy my Jesus here to know.

O hallelujah, yes, ’tis joy!
For it is Christ that I enjoy!
On land or sea, what matters where?
  Where Jesus is, my joy is there.
2
The earth was once a bitter place
Till Jesus showed His smiling face;
Now joy's begun within my soul,
'Twill last while endless ages roll.
3
What matters where on earth we dwell?
On mountain top, or in the dell,
In cottage, or a mansion fair,
Where Jesus is, my joy is there.

I really enjoy most of the songs. The instrument and lyrics uplift my soul when I feel lonely and bored.

Thank you so much for the inspiration and blessings it has been to me.

This hymn has always been an inspiration to me and it’s words and melody have never failed to bring me into the presence of the smiling face of Jesus.

I also appreciate and agree with Brother Steve Millers comments on the original use of the word heaven.

We are currently looking for assisted living for my aging parents whose health is failing. It is a difficult transition for them after living in their home for over 50 years. This song reminds me my joy and home is wherever Jesus is.

What matters where on earth we dwell?

On mountain top, or in the dell,

In cottage, or a mansion fair,

Where Jesus is, my joy is there.

Charles J. Butler (USA 1860)—Butler, a Methodist, speaks of a voyage he took from his home, Camden, New Jersey, as a bachelor, to Britain around 1894, stating he roamed around the British Isles for 14 months through Scotland, Ireland, Britain, and Paris, dealing with ship stewards, street urchins, and visiting famous sites. He wrote about his trip in 1901. He later resided in Philadelphia and was a salesman and musician. He wrote “Heart Melodies # 3” with Charles Bentley (1897). He is possibly the listed secretary of the YMCA in Philadelphia in 1920.

Butter also wrote this hymn “Since Christ My Soul from Sin Set Free” which was one of the hymns selected for the memorial of a dear servant of the Lord celebrated today in the church in Newinton, Connecticut (3-06-22).

Ricky was a crazy lover of the Lord, an exceptional family man and dedicated doctor. He will be missed. The other hymn selected in his memorial titled “A Celebration of Life, ” was “Sweet Hour of Prayer. ” By William W. Walford.

Colossians 1:12 reveals that Christ is the alotted portion of the saints in the light. Hallelujah, He is our portion, our enjoyment! On land or sea, what matter where? Where Jesus is, my joy is there! Praise Him!

Revised version:

1. Christ Jesus makes my heart rejoice;

He makes me sing with ringing voice.

Where Jesus is, I can rejoice!

Where Jesus is, make joyful noise!

Chorus:

Oh, Hallelujah! I can sing!

Yes, I can let glad praises ring!

Where Jesus is, I can rejoice!

Where Jesus is, make joyful noise!

2. Once body, soul were burdened sore;

Now all is peace forevermore.

My sins were all by Him forgiv'n;

My troubles all were borne by Him.

3. Once I was blind, as darkest night;

Now I have sight, as noonday bright.

My straying feet He set aright;

Now He does lead on paths of light.

4. Once I was lonely, all alone;

Now Him as my Companion own.

Moment by moment He's with me,

Shows sympathy and cares for me.

5. His sweet love draws me on His way;

His full grace brings me to obey.

His loving heart's deliv'ring me;

His gracious hand's preserving me.

6. Oh, whom have I in heav'n but Him?

To whom belong on earth but Him?

His love eternally shall last!

My love for Him's not quickly past.
