I heard a message recently in which the speaker shared that the 'all things' in Romans 8: 28 are the persons, matters and things which the Lord uses to force us to sink into our spirit. This sinking into our spirit is a form of baptism, having the effect of separating us from everything which is not of God, and for which, ultimately, we should be grateful.

All things work together for good to those who love God. Do I love God?... I do! I love God! So I have no need to be anxious, everything will work out for good in the end! Thanks for the reminder Lord!!
