James Procter was a founder member of the Atheist society "The Free Thinkers" becoming its president. He was the Richard Dawkins of his day. He originally wrote the poem lines I've tried in vain a thousand ways
My fears to quell, my hopes to raise;
and only after his conversion added the remaining lines. I was priviledged to meet the music writer Robert Harkness and he was greatly affected by the story behind the words.
