牛顿（John Newton，1725~1807）于一七二五年出生在英国伦敦。父亲常年在外，从事航海事业，因此教养的责任，全落在他敬虔爱主的慈母身上。母亲常带着牛顿屈膝在神面前祷告奉献，并教他读圣经，牢记诗歌。牛顿七岁时，慈母因操劳成疾而病逝。这重大的打击使牛顿步入歧途，十岁起就跟随父亲在海上和异乡，过了二十多年流荡的浪子生涯。
牛顿少年时就学水手的放荡不羁、酗酒赌博。他多次听福音；每次听，就忆及儿时慈母的容颜与教导，倍感扎心，但始终无法自拔，仍旧沉溺在罪恶之中。之后，他在非洲从事贩卖黑奴的勾当。结果却闹出事情，反被卖为奴隶，遭遇苦待与折磨。肉体与精神的痛苦曾使他企图逃亡，却换得剥衣鞭鞑之苦。几年后，才由其父探知下落，用钱赎回。
有一天，在他坐船返乡途中，忽然遭遇暴风，眼见小船就要倾复，万分危急。就在此时，主答应了牛顿慈母在他年幼时将他奉献给主的祷告。暴风猛烈的吹袭，竟吹热了牛顿冰冷的心；激浪的摇撼，摇醒了他死沉的灵。他想到自己过去犯罪作恶，想到年幼时慈母对他所讲述恩主爱他的故事，就是主是神的爱子，却为他流血受死，这恩是何等的丰，何等的大！他不禁大声的呼求主名，向主祷告，流泪悔改认罪，接受主耶稣作他的救主。之后，他将自己完全奉献给主，事奉主一直忠心至死。
