I had a debt I could not pay

I had a debt I could not pay,
He paid the debt He did not owe,
I needed someone,
To wash my sins away.
And now I sing a brand new song,
"Amazing grace" all day long,
Christ Jesus paid the debt,
That I could never pay.

I was only a week saved in 1976 and went to my first church service in a wee pentecostal church they sang this song "I had a debt..." it touched me so much that I wept my way through the service people came and laid hands on me to pray with me. Each time I think of this wee chorus I always think of that first service I went to and realise how much the Lord loves me. Thank You Jesus.

I have a debt, I can never never pay, I don't even know You Lord, what causes You to pay for my sins, what causes You to pay the debt? Lord I kept turning away from You... Wow Lord truly You are full of grace and tender mercy! Lord I Love You.

Many thanks to pastor Chris who taught me song during Higher Life Conference.

Christ paid my debt and I am free. Amen.

Here are the 2nd and 3rd verses:

He paid the debt on Calvary

He saved my soul and set me free;

I'm glad that Jesus did all my sins erase.

And now I sing a brand new song

Amazing grace the whole day long;

Christ Jesus paid the debt that I could never pay.

Someday He's coming back for me;

I'll live with Him eternally.

Won't it be glory to see Him on that day?

And then I'll sing a brand new song

Amazing grace the whole day long;

Christ Jesus paid the debt that I could never pay.

Beautiful song but still wondering why there are no more stanzas or does anyone know a second stanza to this hymn?

I love the music to this song, and would love to know if it's a song that I can record on my own CD and credited to the site. How would that work?

What a wonderful verse and tune. We'll learn it in our Sunday School!

This is a lovely tune, I will teach my kids and choir members at my church. God bless you. My soul is revived and been reminded of Jesus' mercy for me.
