Soldiers of Christ, arise (Alternate Tune)

1
Soldiers of Christ, arise,
  And put your armor on,
Strong in the strength which God supplies,
  Through His eternal Son;
  Strong in the Lord of Hosts,
  And in His mighty pow'r,
Who in the strength of Jesus trusts
  Is more than conqueror.
2
Stand then in His great might,
  With all His strength endued;
And take, to arm you for the fight,
  The panoply of God,
  That, having all things done,
  And all your conflicts past,
Ye may o'ercome through Christ alone,
  And stand complete at last.
3
Leave no unguarded place,
  No weakness of the soul,
Take every virtue, every grace,
  And fortify the whole.
  To keep your armor bright
  Attend with constant care,
Still walking in your Captain's sight
  And watching unto prayer.
4
Pray, without ceasing pray,
  Your Captain gives the word;
His summons cheerfully obey,
  And call upon the Lord:
  To God your every want
  In instant prayer display;
Pray always; pray, and never faint;
  Pray, without ceasing pray.
5
From strength to strength go on;
  Wrestle, and fight, and pray;
Tread all the powers of darkness down,
  And win the well-fought day:
  Still let the Spirit cry
  In all His soldiers, "Come!"
Till Christ the Lord descend from high,
  And take the conquerors home.

Charles Wesley wrote this hymn in 1749 under the title of "The Whole Armor of God", and it was used to confirm new converts.

The early Methodists took their lives in their hands when they announced themselves as followers of John and Charles Wesley. One writer declared, "There were outrageously treated - stoned, mauled, ducked, hounded with bulldogs, threatened, homes looted, businesses ruined. Anyone who walked through a town could pick out by their ruinous condition the houses where Methodists lived." In one incident at Devizes in Feb, 1747, a crowd surrounded the house where the Methodist leaders were staying, breaking the windows and ripping off the shutters. - Great Songs of Faith by Brown & Norton

I praise God for the full armor in Ephesians 6:10-20. By utilizing the sword of the Spirit we can take the offensive against the forces of darkness in the world, the flesh and the devil and overcome evil with good. Speak the truth in love and be a winner through scriptural songs.
