Thus far, we have seen the Christ revealed in Colossians mainly in a doctrinal way. Now we need to see the experience of this Christ. Colossians 2:6-7 says, "As therefore you have received the Christ, Jesus the Lord, walk in Him, having been rooted and being built up in Him, and being established in the faith even as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving." We need to consider what it means to receive Christ. We received Christ when we opened our being, repented, confessed our sins to Him, and said, "Lord Jesus, I believe into You. Please come into me." When we are newly saved, we may not know that Christ is the life-giving Spirit or that we have a human spirit. We may pray, "Lord Jesus, come into my heart." There is even a popular gospel hymn that says, "Into my heart, into my heart, / Come into my heart, Lord Jesus" (Hymns, #1061). This song is good, but it is not entirely accurate. Second Timothy 4:22a says, "The Lord be with your spirit." It does not say, "The Lord be with your heart." The Lord first comes into our spirit. Ephesians 3:17a speaks of Christ making His home in our heart. After coming into our spirit, Christ gradually makes His home in our heart.
Our spirit may be likened to the living room in a home, and our heart may be likened to the bedroom, the inner chamber. When an unfamiliar guest comes to visit us for a short time, we may welcome him into our living room. However, when an intimate acquaintance comes to stay for several days, we will show him to a bedroom and tell him to feel at home. Regrettably, many of us have received the Lord only into our living room, our spirit. We have not ushered Him into our inner chamber, our heart.
We have received Christ into our spirit, and He now desires to spread into the parts of our heart. The four parts of our heart are our mind, emotion, will, and conscience. Christ is spreading from our spirit in the center of our being to the surrounding parts of our mind, emotion, and will. The Christ whom we have received is not far away, like money in a bank account. Rather, Christ is in our spirit, spreading into our heart. When Christ has spread into all our inward parts, He will be settled in our heart, having made His home in our heart.

Yours is also my testimony. At age 4 VBS I recieved Him into my heart.
When I was 8 in 1954 I needed my appendix out and to this day I remember conversing with Jesus and having a knowing that I would be with Him if that was His will. I remember praying the Now I lay down to sleep prayer and having a peace that passes all understanding as the either took over.
Also want to note that the VBS teacher held the picture of Jesus knocking at the door of our heart and explained that He had to be invited in because if we looked at the door it had no handle on the outside. I know that is not scriptural either about no handle but I agree with the scriptures suggested as the basis for the picture concept.

I only learned the chorus as a child and have been singing that chorus only this way ever since I was confirmed.

I was told to get everything in order for my family for the day the Lord would come for me and I wanted something about this song included. In researching it I found some interesting things.
FIRST: there are verses to it as shown above
SECOND: I found someone has pended this, at some point we should say “Fill my heart with devotion and love for you, Lord Jesus."
THIRD: I found this verse.

I have never heard the verse of this song until today and I love it! I am beginning to sing this song again in my 30s in a different way. I really want Jesus to come into my heart, so that He shines out of my heart for people to see!

I can never forget. In fact it is as clear as yesterday. When I was 4 years old my Sunday school teacher had us sing this as our closing song every week. One Sunday, it must have been Easter. I was wearing a bright pink polka dot dress my mother had made for me. We learned about how Jesus died on the cross for us. That day I understood the song, and when we sang it was my prayer. I meant it with all my heart. Jesus became my lifelong best friend. There could have been no better blessing in my childhood! We've been through a lot together, He and I. Frogs, doll's, Test, school buddies and bullies, heartbreaks, parties, findings husband, childbirth and child loss, when life was incredibly hard and when I'm bubbling over with joy. He's always been there! I long for the day I'll see him face to face. Right now, I still have kids to raise, and things to do. When it comes my time to go, I'm not afraid of death. He'll be with me then too. Oh how I love my Jesus!
