主！使我更愛你，和你更親密
有人說，若不是布立思腓力 （Philip P. Bliss，1838～1876）
英年早逝，他在詩歌詞曲上帶給後世聖徒的影響，應與克羅斯比芬妮、衛斯理查理等人相當，甚至超越他們。他在短短六年的服事中，留下了許多充滿感力的詩歌。
一八三八年七月九日，布立思生於美國賓州克里菲德（Clearfield）的羅蒙城（Rome），他的父母是愛主的基督徒。父親要求全家人每天都要聚在一起，唱詩讚美、敬拜神。天天禱告的生活，為布立思打下良好的屬靈根基。雖然家中窮困的環境，未能在他幼年時，讓他的音樂天賦嶄露頭角，但在充滿了讚美和敬拜的詩歌、樂聲中成長，卻幫助布立思操練每天活在主面前，時刻接觸主。
布立思的童年幾乎都在農村度過。十歲那年，他有時會進城賣菜，擔負家計。有一天他經過一個地方，聽見傳來陣陣前所未聞的樂聲。這是他第一次聽見鋼琴的聲音。他被這甜美的琴音吸引，一路循著琴聲，悄悄的走進一間開著房門的屋子，默默的倚在門柱旁聽得如醉如痴。纔十歲的布立思，對音樂的渴望就此開始萌芽。
一八五五年，布立思到賓州東特洛伊（East Troy）學校讀書。次年夏天，他進入農場工作以維持生活，農忙之餘纔利用時間去學校上課。因著他的努力學習，十八歲就取得了教師資格，開始教書。在生活稍微安定後，得以正式開始學習音樂。他也有幸得著名師指導，一年之後就在羅蒙城的一場音樂會上參加演出。

一八五九年，布立思與同是在音樂上深具造詣的楊露西（Lucy Young）結婚。露西成了布立思服事上的好配搭，兩人在詩歌創作上常夫唱婦隨，彼此鼓勵。一八六一到一八六三年間，布立思一面演出，一面深造，那期間他常常作曲。不久，主的呼召明顯的臨到他，要他在詩歌和音樂上服事主。他所寫的詩歌，每一首都非常優美且充滿了聖靈的能力。
一八六九年夏天，布立思遇見神所重用的僕人—慕迪（D. L. Moody）。慕迪那時在各處傳揚福音。有一次布立思參加其中一場聚會，卻發現聚會的唱詩很弱，於是主動題出願意在慕迪的聚會裏幫助詩歌服事。慕迪也發現他在詩歌服事的那一分，便鼓勵他以詩歌服事主。從此，布立思就積極在詩歌一面投入主的事工。
布立思因為與慕迪一同配搭事奉，就專注於福音詩歌；那時他所寫的詩歌，都成為傳福音很有效的憑藉。他的詩歌容易摸著人的感覺，使人深受感動。詩歌七百二十首是布立思根據民數記二十一章摩西在曠野舉蛇的事例所寫，由這首詩歌可以略略體會布立思在福音負擔上的熱切。

對你憂更關心，因你苦更貧
一八七三、七四年間，慕迪寫了好幾封信給布立思，竭力勸勉並催促布立思放下一切世務，專心在福音詩歌上服事主。詩歌二百九十七首大約是布立思在決定放下一切其他俗事，全時間事奉時所作。這首詩歌共計有二十四個『更』字，正如彼後一章四至七節所說，『有了…又要加上…，』（另譯）意味著無止境的加增。在屬靈的路上，我們不能滿意於已有的、現有的，我們需要一再向前。這也意味著屬靈的事對我們是豐富無限，一生享用不竭、追測不盡的。

這段時間，布立思的作品到處受人稱讚，被人傳唱，家中收入也開始豐裕。從前他和妻子長期處在經濟拮据的環境中，深處實在期望有一天神能恩待他們，使他們能過得安定一點，寬裕一些。現在，這個盼望正在實現，但是他們卻發現，主對他們有更大的要求和更高的呼召。布立思被主的愛充滿，毫無考慮的答應了主的呼召，放下兩人多年求取些微安逸的盼望，願意一生過簡單樸實的生活，跟隨他們所愛的救主。
使我更屬天，更常見你面
因著主的呼召和慕迪的鼓勵，布立思在一八七六年底將四歲及一歲的幼子暫托母親，與妻子一同搭乘火車前往芝加哥，好全力豫備接下來一連串聚集中的服事。當列車經過俄亥俄州的阿什塔比拉河（Ashta-bula）時，卻發生了一件震驚當時社會各界的不幸悲劇。他們所搭乘的列車在能見度甚低的暴風雪中奔馳時，竟然在大橋上出事，有十一節車廂從六、七十呎高的橋上墜落峽谷；幾分鐘後，整列火車冒出火燄。雖然布立思幸運的從車中逃出，但他隨即回頭搶救受困在熊熊烈火中的妻子和其他乘客，結果他與妻子及許多乘客，都被困在車內而喪生。
沒有人料想到，布立思會過世得這麼突然。他的驟逝，讓人想起他生前曾為一位愛主的弟兄—史巴福（Horatio G. Spafford）所譜的詩歌：『平安正如水流，一路跟隨我』（詩歌二六八首）；這首詩歌至今仍在安慰許多傷痛者的魂。一八七三年十一月，史巴福的妻子帶著四個孩子乘船前往法國。這艘輪船卻在途中與另一艘船相撞，大部分的船員及乘客均葬身海底。史巴福的妻子在浮沉中被救起，然而孩子們卻都罹難。兩年後，史巴福的喪子之痛稍得平撫，寫下『平安正如水流，一路跟隨我』的詩詞，並請布立思為他譜曲。這首詩歌於一八七六年十一月在芝加哥首度發表。就在那次聚會一個月後，布立思與他的妻子又不幸罹難。當我們唱到布立思所譜出的豪邁曲調，相信布立思在面臨死亡時，也像這首詩歌所說，『任何的遭遇，你已教我能說，我魂，你應安息，無所恐！』
