Faith of our fathers, living still
Format:
- Faith of our fathers, living still
In spite of dungeon, fire and sword,
O how our hearts beat high with joy
Whene’er we hear that glorious word!
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death! - Our fathers, chained in prisons dark,
Were still in heart and conscience free;
And blest would be their children’s fate,
If they, like them should die for thee:
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death! - Faith of our fathers, we will strive
To win all nations unto thee;
And through the truth that comes from God
Mankind shall then indeed be free.
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death! - Faith of our fathers, we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife,
And preach thee, too, as love knows how
By kindly words and virtuous life.
Faith of our fathers! holy faith!
We will be true to thee till death!

It is really time now for all people of whatever tribe, nation, creed etc. to return to the Faith our Fathers passed on to us from the time Christ descended into hell and conquered hell. The Apostles lived that Faith. The world today need to return to that faith.

Every generation faces hardship and a choice to hold on to the hope we have in Christ and the power and comfort of His word. Faith of our Fathers describes that steadfast faith that will not grow cold. This hymn is so meaningful to me. I remember my great aunt Bess singing this hymn often while working on the farm. I wonder what hardships her life faced that she clung to it so dearly.

Thanks for the tune of this song. I am a fundamentalist Christian and absolutely pray and believe the world can never choke the living word. Christ lives and our faith in Him must live and be shared to the dying world. It is the only cure to sin and satanism; only His word for spiritual revolution; let's share it and live by it.

Thank you, Mr. Wilson, for the historical background of this song. Reading the lyrics had me wondering about that. It will add special perspective when I play this soulful song on the piano for special occasions. Much obliged. If anyone has additional information about the melody, please share that, too.

This is a very inspirational hymn; makes me feel proud on the way early Christians went through persecutions for their faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. May we who live in today's world with so much freedom take inspiration fom them and live a life worthy of being called a true Christian. Praise Jesus!

I love the lyrics, I heard it when I was young but did not understand. It is a very powerful hymn. It is awesome. I can understand to depth what Christians went through thru the ages. No Matter What, Jesus Christ Lives. Christianity will go on!! I am a Catholic and I love it!!!

This hymn was written in celebration of the Catholic Emancipation Act, by which it became legal for the first time since the Reformation for Roman Catholics to worship openly in England. The bit about 'our father's chained in prisons dark'--nobody had gone to prison for a while just for being Catholic, but there would have been English Catholics who were old enough to have remembered stories from their childhoods of it having happened to people of the immediately preceding generation.
