How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear,
And drives away his fear,
And drives away his fear,
It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest,
And to the weary rest,
And to the weary rest,
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest.
It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest,
And to the weary rest,
And to the weary rest,
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest.

Dear Name! the Rock on which we build;
Our shield and hiding-place;
Our never-failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace,
With boundless stores of grace,
With boundless stores of grace,
Our never-failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace.
Dear Name! the Rock on which we build;
Our shield and hiding-place;
Our never-failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace,
With boundless stores of grace,
With boundless stores of grace,
Our never-failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace.

Jesus, our Savior, Shepherd, Friend,
Our Prophet, Priest, and King;
Our Lord, our Life, our Way, our End,
Accept the praise we bring,
Accept the praise we bring,
Accept the praise we bring,
Our Lord, our Life, our Way, our End,
Accept the praise we bring.
Jesus, our Savior, Shepherd, Friend,
Our Prophet, Priest, and King;
Our Lord, our Life, our Way, our End,
Accept the praise we bring,
Accept the praise we bring,
Accept the praise we bring,
Our Lord, our Life, our Way, our End,
Accept the praise we bring.

Weak is the effort of our heart,
And cold our warmest thought;
But when we see Thee as Thou art,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
But when we see Thee as Thou art,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought.
Weak is the effort of our heart,
And cold our warmest thought;
But when we see Thee as Thou art,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
But when we see Thee as Thou art,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought.

Till then we would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath;
And triumph in that blessed Name
Which quells the pow’r of death,
Which quells the pow’r of death,
Which quells the pow’r of death,
And triumph in that blessed Name
Which quells the pow’r of death.
Till then we would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath;
And triumph in that blessed Name
Which quells the pow’r of death,
Which quells the pow’r of death,
Which quells the pow’r of death,
And triumph in that blessed Name
Which quells the pow’r of death.

I have known this hymn since I was young. I love the tune. I saw it in a different light this morning. I think the first verse about His name is key. When we call His name we simultaneously get Him! So “it” refers to His Name His person. It soothes our sorrow. It heals our wounds, and drives away our fear. What a blessing that the church has His name! Through His name we have all the riches of His person shown in the verses that follow. All of these things are for us to enjoy! This hymn only touches a few things we receive from His name. We will eventually have His name on our forehead. The church needs no other name nor should It have any other name!

I needed this hymn this morning. But what even teared me up was the comments of believers here. I don't know any of you guys but I can sense that you are my brothers and sisters. I hope earnestly that we all meet in heaven eventually.
I'm seeking for Revival within and without.
My Love, My Life, My Way, My End... Help me.
Note: why is this version different? Why the repetition of the last lines? I don't know how that sings.
Even so, it's an amazing Hymn. I'll read up about John Newton.
God bless you all
