About Numbered Notation

Numbered Notation (also called Jianpu, 简谱) writes each melody note as a number from 1 to 7 instead of a note on a staff. The number shows the note's position in the song's scale -- not its exact pitch -- so the same tune looks identical no matter what key it's sung in.

Within one octave, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 correspond to the familiar do re mi fa sol la ti. A dot above a number raises it an octave higher; a dot below lowers it an octave lower -- no dot means the middle, as-written octave.

A plain number lasts one beat. A dash (-) right after a number holds that same note for one more beat. A line underneath a number shortens it instead -- one line is half a beat, two lines a quarter of a beat. A 0 is a rest: silence for one beat.

The label at the top of the sheet, like "1=C" or "1=Ab", shows which pitch scale degree 1 ("do") is tuned to. A song in a minor key is labeled "6=X" instead -- scale degree 6 ("la") is the true tonic. Chord names printed above the notes (like "C" or "G7") always use their familiar letter names, never numbers.

For example, under a "1=C" heading, the numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 sound as C D E F G A B. Under a "1=G" heading, those very same numbers sound as G A B C D E F# instead -- same shape, different key.

What profit all the labor here

Gospel General

English1080
1
What profit all the labor here?
There’s nothing new for you and me!
Remember not the former things,
They’re all vanity!

Vanity! Vanity!
Vanity! Vanity!
’Tis chasing the wind,
It’s all vanity!
2
Man’s life is full of grief and pain:
Much wisdom bringeth misery!
Increasing knowledge addeth woe!
It’s all vanity!
3
What good our pleasure and our wealth?
Though joys we have and family,
We’ll have our worries just the same!
It’s all vanity!
4
Days of toil to gain and restless nights:
Though gained without calamity,
When death comes, it is gone for aye!
It’s all vanity!
5
Remember God in days of youth!
Fear Him, and such will be your gain!
With Him you will be satisfied,
For He is not vain!

Christ without, all is vain!
Christ within, all is gain!
All things are vain,
Christ only is gain!

Ecclesiastes 1:2 says:

Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher; Vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

The book of Proverbs stresses the wisdom that man receives of God through his contacting of God, wisdom that teaches man how to behave in his human life. Ecclesiastes stresses the vanity of vanities of all things under the sun, as realized by man through the wisdom received from God. No matter how good, excellent, marvelous, and wonderful a thing may be, as long as it is of the old creation, it is part of the vanity of vanities under the sun. Only the new creation, which is in the heavens and not “under the sun, ” is not vanity but is reality. The next book, Song of Songs, stresses that Christ is the song of songs, the satisfaction of satisfactions to human life, which is versus the vanity of vanities of all things under the sun.
