As an elderly person, I have passed through a great many different experiences in human life. Many unpleasant things have happened to me. There is no such thing as a life without difficulties. As the line from a hymn says, "God hath not promised skies always blue" (Hymns, #720). But although I have passed through many situations of unhappiness and unpleasantness, I have been a happy person because I have the Lord Jesus. Even the demons can testify that I am happy in the Lord. I do not have the Lord Jesus merely in an objective way as the One in the heavens. My Christ is both in the heavens and also in me. Hallelujah, Christ lives in me, and I can breathe Him, drink of Him, and feast upon Him! Daily I enjoy the best breathing, drinking, and eating.
As fallen ones, we may have the fallen natural concept that if we fear God, serve Him, love Him, and follow Him, we will prosper in everything; the unhealthy will become healthy and the foolish will become wise. However, God has not promised this. Hymns, #720 was written by an experienced Christian. Verse 1 and the chorus say,
...
Many times, God has placed those who love Him into trials and sufferings that they may experience more of Him. When everything is calm and peaceful, we seldom think of enjoying God and know very little about experiencing the Lord. Only when we fall into sufferings can we be humbled to trust the Lord wholeheartedly, call on Him, and enjoy Him.

Though our life supply is sufficient and strong, the world has its ways of weighing down on us. I am just so thankful for this hymn, for it is not me, alone, against the world! Hallelujah, Lord Jesus...thank You for this beautiful song. Lord, grow in me all my days, root me deeper in You! Strengthen my spirit, fill me with Your Spirit...You are my living hope.

My dear mom Beverly went into the arm of the Savior on April 9 2012. She was a real overcomer. This hymn was used for her placard with her picture on it.

My dad passed away in 1969 and in interred at Queen of Heaven cemetery in Hillside. This is on the window next to his crypt. My Mom had macular degeneration and every month we went to visit with dad. My Mom would have me read it aloud 4 or 5 times. Such Beauty in such simplicity.

A month ago, I lost my job unexpectedly and am still looking. Today I opened my Bible to Psalms and a marker was there that my mother penned. The first verse of this song. Today would have been her Birthday! What a message and what timing.

This Hymn has wonderful memories for me as a child growing up and it still has. My Father used to recite the first verse of this Hymn to us all as a Family, at the dinner table countless times and it became so loved that we would all repeat it time and time again. Sometimes when things aren't going as I would like, this Hymn lifts my soul and puts things into perspective for me
The words are so simple yet they say and mean so much and are such a Blessing.
