Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.
Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.
Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I now can see
Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.
Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God.
Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God.
5
Standing on the promises I shall not fall,
List’ning every moment to the Spirit’s call.
Resting in my Savior as my All in all,
Standing on the promises of God.
List’ning every moment to the Spirit’s call.
Resting in my Savior as my All in all,
Standing on the promises of God.

d. Believing On,
Taking the Ground and the Stand On,
the Lord Jesus to Be Saved
To believe is to believe on, to take the ground and stand on, the Lord Jesus to be saved. Acts 16:31 says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved. ” This indicates that we believe not only into Christ but also on Christ. This is to take the ground and the standing on the person of Christ and all that He has accomplished, both of which constitute the belief, the faith, of God’s New Testament economy. We believe on Christ as the ground and standing so that we may be saved.
Mark 16:16 says, “He who believes and is baptized shall be saved, but he who does not believe shall be condemned. ” This verse does not say “who does not believe and is not baptized. ” This indicates that condemnation is related to not believing; it is not related to not being baptized. Believing is sufficient for one to receive salvation from condemnation. To believe is to receive the Lord Jesus not only for forgiveness of sins ( Acts 10:43 ) but also for regeneration ( 1 Pet. 1:21 , 23 ) that we may become the children of God ( John 1:12-13 ) and the members of Christ ( Eph. 5:30 ) in an organic union with the Triune God ( Matt. 28:19 ).
Romans 1:16 tells us that the gospel is “the power of God unto salvation to every one who believes. ” In the book of Romans salvation includes not only salvation from God’s condemnation and from hell; it also includes salvation from naturalness, self-likeness, individualism, and divisiveness. This salvation saves us to the uttermost, enabling us to be sanctified, conformed, glorified, transformed, built up with the others as the one Body, and not divisive in the church life. For all who believe, the gospel is the power of God unto such a full, complete, and ultimate salvation.

The Promises
The promise certainly covers the dispensations of innocence, conscience, human government, and promise. This includes the Old Testament from Adam until the giving of the law to Moses. The book of Genesis, in particular, is a book of God’s promise.
Do you know what was the first promise given by God in Genesis? The first promise is recorded in Genesis 3:15 : “I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. ” This promise was given immediately after the fall of man. Probably Adam and Eve were in fear and trembling because of their disobedience. But God gave them a marvelous promise. This promise was that a seed of the woman would come to bruise the head of the serpent. Although his heel would be bruised, the seed of woman would nevertheless crush the serpent’s head. What a great promise this is!
The gospel is the fulfillment of the promise that the seed of the woman would crush the head of the serpent. We know that Christ, the seed of woman, did come. He was born of a virgin as the fulfillment of the promise in Genesis 3:15 . This One, the woman’s seed, is the Slave-Savior presented in the Gospel of Mark.
Another promise, also concerning the seed, was given to Abraham. According to Genesis 22:17 and 18 the Lord promised Abraham, “In blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies, and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. ” Here we have the promise that Abraham’s seed would be a great blessing to all mankind, for all nations would be blessed through his seed.

The story behind this hymn is just as powerful as its lyrics. It will stir your faith to hold firmly to the promises of God’s Word for your life.
Russell Kelso Carter (1849–1928) was a remarkable man—an outstanding athlete and scholar at a military academy who went on to become a successful teacher and coach. Later, he served as an ordained Methodist minister before studying medicine and spending his later years as a practicing doctor. Carter was also gifted in music and songwriting.
Though Carter had long professed faith in Christ, it was a personal health crisis that brought him into a deeper experience of God’s promises. At the age of 30, he was diagnosed with a severe heart condition that doctors said was beyond cure. With no medical hope left, Carter turned to God in earnest prayer. Kneeling before the Lord, he vowed that whether he was healed or not, his life would be wholly devoted to God’s service.
From that moment, the Scriptures came alive to him. He began to take God’s promises of healing at face value, choosing to believe them regardless of his symptoms or feelings. Over the next several months, his strength returned, and his heart was completely restored. Carter went on to live another 49 healthy years.
The hymn he had written years earlier—Standing on the Promises—took on new meaning after that experience. It became more than a song; it became his testimony and way of life.
May we continue to have fresh encounter on the UNCHANGEABLE PROMISES OF GOD!

This hymn makes my faith and trust in God come alive. Even if I'm in the midst of the storms of life, in Christ I'm standing as my All in all because there's no victory outside Him.
