Create in me a clean heart, O God

LSM324 NS51

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a right spirit within me.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Thy presence;
Take not Thy holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation;
And renew a right spirit within me.

The words of this song I believe were composed by the Holy Spirit of God and given to King David as he prayed to God for forgiveness in realizing he heart was not as pure as he knew it should be. David a Man after God's own heart, knew he needed God, to create that heart, for he knew he could do it on his own.

Lord, create in us a clean heart! Purify and cleanse our heart. We turn to You and we depend on You. We do not trust in ourselves, and we donโ€™t trust even our heart. Come in, Lord, and create in us a pure heart. Strengthen our spirit to be strong and immovable! Make our spirit unshakable and steadfast. Lord, how much we need You in our daily living. We love you Lord Jesus ๐Ÿ™

Although Keith Green may get credited for this chorus, as a preachers kid, I can vouch for those who know that it was written well before Keith was on the scene. His version is incredibly raw and beautiful, but he isn't the author. Well, David is the author, but he isn't the writer of the melody either. I looked in some old Jesus Movement song books and couldn't find it there either. I think it was probably an unknown composer of the music and shared as a community song, much like other older choruses in the Church.

He may have written the new music, but the words are a traditional collect sung as part of the Catholic mass and the old Lutheran service before the changes in the 1970s.

According to Google Keith Green covered this song. No info on who wrote it or when.

I never heard that this was written by Keith Green. It was performed by a group from Bethel Assembly of God. He would have been a teen ager around 17. I heard it sung in Redding, CA in around 1969 or 1970. Does anyone know any details?
