How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear,
And drives away his fear,
And drives away his fear,
It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest,
And to the weary rest,
And to the weary rest,
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest.
It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;

Dear Name! the Rock on which we build;
Our shield and hiding-place;
Our never-failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace,
With boundless stores of grace,
With boundless stores of grace,
Our never-failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace.
Dear Name! the Rock on which we build;
Our shield and hiding-place;
Our never-failing treasury, filled

With boundless stores of grace,
Our never-failing treasury, filled
With boundless stores of grace.

Jesus, our Savior, Shepherd, Friend,
Our Prophet, Priest, and King;
Our Lord, our Life, our Way, our End,
Accept the praise we bring,
Accept the praise we bring,
Accept the praise we bring,
Our Lord, our Life, our Way, our End,
Accept the praise we bring.
Jesus, our Savior, Shepherd, Friend,
Our Prophet, Priest, and King;
Our Lord, our Life, our Way, our End,
Accept the praise we bring,
Accept the praise we bring,
Accept the praise we bring,
Our Lord, our Life, our Way, our End,
Accept the praise we bring.

Weak is the effort of our heart,
And cold our warmest thought;
But when we see Thee as Thou art,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
But when we see Thee as Thou art,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought.
Weak is the effort of our heart,
And cold our warmest thought;
But when we see Thee as Thou art,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought,
But when we see Thee as Thou art,
We’ll praise Thee as we ought.

Till then we would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath;
And triumph in that blessed Name
Which quells the pow’r of death,
Which quells the pow’r of death,
Which quells the pow’r of death,
And triumph in that blessed Name
Which quells the pow’r of death.
Till then we would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath;
And triumph in that blessed Name
Which quells the pow’r of death,
Which quells the pow’r of death,
Which quells the pow’r of death,
And triumph in that blessed Name
Which quells the pow’r of death.

This hymn was written by a notorious sinner and former slave trader who was saved on a stormy voyage across the ocean. His name is John Newton and it has blessed countless of believers on both sides of the Atlantic and all around the Christian world. But interestingly, he wrote the hymn during the American Revolution, when the colonies and Britain were at war. The opposing sides were greatly blessed by the words, perhaps even both singing it as they fired shots in the battlefield. The wonderful words of this poem remind us, of who Jesus is to us, how He restores, heals, and cares for us, telling us to turn to Him in our path through life, with its many ups and downs. John would often come up with words that could be sung by tying simple songs to his sermon messages, and thereby help his congregation take to heart the message being conveyed to them.
The first phrase would have been especially meaningful to Newton, who, as a young slave- trader, lived among sailors who were fouled mouthed, regularly taking the Lord’s name in vain. Interestingly, Newton connected the hymn to “Solomon’s Song, ” and noted Song of Solomon 1:3 along side of it. This verse alludes to the sweet fragrance of a name, (and in Newton’s case, especially after the rough life he had lived), to the beauty of the name of Jesus, who saved and redeemed him out of his sinful existence.
